Wrotham Classic Steam & Transport Rally

Wrotham Steam & Transport Rally

About Friends of Wrotham

The Classic Rally on Wrotham Hill has a rich history as a fun family day out, but did you know it’s primarily a means to raise funds that can be used to benefit the local area? This page has details of the Rally’s history, as well as the story of the Friends of Wrotham charity.

You can also scroll down to find a gallery with some of our favourite photos from the Rally in years gone by.

Beginnings

The very first meeting of our Classic Transport Rally  was back in 1979. It was held in the grounds of Yaldham Manor, not too far from our current site on Wrotham Hill. The event was started by a group of villagers who wanted to raise money to help promote sporting and educational activities in the village of Wrotham. This later became the Charity ‘Friends of Wrotham’.

The annual Rally is supported by a wonderful team of volunteers who give their time to help the event run smoothly. Proceeds from ticket sales are invested back in to the local area, as well as donations from our exhibitors, who have a great opportunity to show off their classic vehicles in the countryside.

We are also so grateful to our event sponsors: to Invicta Insurance for continuing to support us by providing our insurance and to the St Clere Estate for allowing us to use their land each year.

Friends of Wrotham

Since its inception, Friends of Wrotham has worked to support projects in our Kentish village.

The charity’s original vision was to see a new building established on the recreation ground in Wrotham, that could provide facilities for use by everyone in the village. In 2013, this vision was realised when the Wrotham Pavilion was opened. With the money raised through the Rally, the charity was able to donate £60,000 towards the Pavilion project.

Other significant projects which have benefitted from the event include funding the purchase of play equipment, stage lighting and ICT suites for local schools. The Friends of Wrotham have also been able to support the local bowls club, who needed new doors and windows for their leaking pavilion, as well as buying new lawnmowers for both the cricket club and bowls club in Wrotham. We were even able to fund new balls for the croquet club!

Back in 2016, we were thrilled to be able to donate £22,000 towards the new children’s play area in the Wrotham Recreation Ground. We worked with a team of local mums, calling themselves ‘Wrotham Parklife’, together with Wrotham Parish Council, to raise over £100,000 towards the project, providing match funding.

We have a fantastic group of Trustees and Volunteers, who are hard at work to raise funds, and find the next projects for the charity to support. If you’d like to donate to Friends of Wrotham, you can do so here via Paypal (Paypal account not required). Or to keep up with our latest projects, follow us on Facebook or Twitter, where we often share news and updates.
